Herbal Spotlight - Holy Basil

Holy Basil, or Tulsi, is a herb native to Southeast Asia and has a long history within Ayurvedic medicine as a treatment for many diseases. The name ‘Tulsi’ means “the incomparable one”. Different parts of the plant are used for different ailments but the whole plant is considered a tonic for body, mind & spirit. I am spotlighting this stunning herb this month as it is particularly renowned for its use in easing respiratory ailments. Equally as important, it is also an adaptogen - this is a natural substance which helps the body adapt to stress and promotes mental balance. Some of it’s health promoting properties include:

  • Antimicrobial

  • Antidiarrheal

  • Anti-oxidant

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Liver, brain & heart protective

  • Anti-diabetic

  • Anti-pyretic (prevents itching)

  • Anti-tussive (treats coughs)

Specifically it’s use as an adaptogen means it can play a role in many different functions:
